I recently had a huge eye opener. I way, way over spent on my budget last month.
Now normally I would go to the grocery store daily, my average weekly cost of food for a family of 6 would come in around 150.00/month. It's a reasonable cost. However, this week that luxury wasn't afforded to me and I was forced into creative cooking, while trying to maintain my diet. In my cupboards, fridge and freezer was this: 3 sweet potatoes 1/2 bag of frozen corn 3 tomatoes 1 green pepper 2 Avocados 4 pork chops 10 pieces of shrimp well needless to say next to nothing. When push came to shove I managed to feed all 6 of us for an approximate 25.00 that week.. I discovered that my 6 year old air popcorn maker still worked (I paid 2.00 for it) was not only a fraction of the cost, better for you then microwave popcorn and it takes the same amount of time. Aside from all those perks, the kids had a great time watching it pop. This week led me to sit and really analyze the state the world is in. I spent some time touring the Canada Public Health website. The numbers were slightly outdated, most recent studies were performed in 2007. I was disgusted to know that in 2007 8.6% of children aged 6-17 were obese and a whopping 25% of adults! That averages every one in four adults are obese. As far as our children are concerned, not only are they going to be psychologically impacted at a young age, but we are setting them up for a life time of medical hardships including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, several forms of cancer and ultimately pre-mature death. What is it going to take for people to wake up? We are going to be sending our children into an era where the life expectancy goes back to 25 years of age. It takes just as long to make a dish at home as it does to go through a drive thru, and not to mention cost. If your buying prepared foods your paying higher taxes in grocery stores and takeout. It simply tastes better with fresh prepared meals.
