BETAINE

What supplement does a power lifter a pig and a horse have in common? BETAINE!!

Well what does a vitamin used primarily for digestion have to do with weight lifting and athletics? EVERYTHING

Naturally found in food sources such as spinach and whole grains, this magic supplement is generally used to control homocysteine levels, a non-protein amino acid, that’s regulated by enzymes.  High levels are a risk factor for stroke and neuro-degenerative diseases.

Also know as Trimethlgylcine (TMG), studies have shown that usage has increased strength, muscle mass and lowered body fat.  A six week study on strength training athletes showed an improvement in body composition, arm size, bench press and power.

Aside from gaining the lean mass of a horse, it’s also shown to oxidize fat lipids (fat loss).  Coming to the aid of alcohol induced fatty liver disease by preventing ethanol.  This blessed little vitamin also showed an increased appetite and improved digestive efficiency and in our four legged friends it has increase lean muscle mass and reproductive abilities!

Betaine is not only used for the pluses offered to bodybuilders, its imperative to intestinal function and cell production.

Protecting DNA and kidneys.  It’s increased low plasma –contains proteins needed to clot blood, and transports substances through the blood. Aiding people with blood related diseases.

Other uses include: Decreased fat tissue, neurological development, dry mouth, fat degeneration, reduced liver triglycerides and liver lipidosis, cholesterol and so much more!!!

Bovine Colostrum....is it BS?

I'm very fortunate working in this industry.....Not only is it exciting to see the many changes and exciting new products, but I get to filter through the crap and give it to you straight,

There is a new and exciting product on the market with an obscene amount of claims BIOGRO.  Like all new products stepping into the market this is the be all and end all of muscle mass and strength gains.  Well let me tell you......I believe it actually is.

Working in a supplement store certainly has its perks, you can find people willing take just about anything.  And as you all know that includes my husband....hehe.  So as a little science experiment, we took five people, my husband and four other employees and started them all at the same time.  All incredibly had the same results.

What are the results? Without talking among on another, the first week they all approached me with an intense pump.  A skin tearing pump.  Day to Day they woke up leaner, more energy and enhanced mood.

Negative you ask? Well my husband came off and he's more tired and lethargic than he's been in the last two weeks, he's had disrupted sleep and slightly more moody - thats of course coming from me!

So what is the miracle cure all and how does it work?

BIOGRO is a bio active peptide using bovine colostrum.  I know....we said the same thing.....what the hell is that?

First lets discuss a peptide: A chemical compound containing two or more amino acids with a special linkage, which the nitrogen atom of one amino binds with the carboxyl carbon atom.

Next.....a Bio Active Peptide - Cleaved protein fragments extracted from the highest grade bovine colostrums.

Colostrum - Is an early form of milk that contains proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals, and anti-bodies.

I would give you all the negative first, however, there is nothing that has come to my attention as of yet.  But fear not, as soon as there is I will also bring it to your attention - or of course you can bring it to mine.
The benefits of colostrum are endless and I am overly excited to share only a fraction of the results of my research.

Colostrum is used for:
  • Boosting the immune system
  • Healing injuries
  • Repairing nervous system damage
  • Mood improvements
  • Slows and reverses aging
  • Kills bacteria and Fungus
  • Used to treat inflammation

There is so much more, but I would have you reading all day.  It has been studies that show it alleviates symptoms of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Bi-Polar IBS and Crohn's disease and more I recommend if you have the time look up the scientific studies....they will blow your mind and get you as excited as I am.

ZMA.....Worth it?

8/7/2013

Okay, I know it's been sometime and of course I apologize.  I took full advantage of that amazing heat wave!

I recently came in contact with several athletes and bodybuilders who swear by a supplement known as ZMA.  I had never heard of this next big thing so I thought I would do a little research for my clients and friends.

ZMA - Zinc and Magnesium Aspartate. This supplement is actually one that has been on the shelves for sometime.  It's seems to be making a huge comeback this year though.
Also included in ZMA is the vitamin B6, which we know is used for mineral absorption.  Okay let's get down to it.  What are the benefits of ZMA?

Well it's best known for the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.  Well so does a Calcium Magnesium.....so what's the big deal?
This is all based on internet research, of course I will try it and let you know my findings - or I may use my husband for the test subject.  ZMA when taken 30-60 minutes before bed and two hours after your last meal, is SUPPOSED to burst natural testosterone levels a whopping 30%! That's insane! It's a pretty big claim to make I know - so fear not fellow readers I shall of course feed this to my husband and not tell him what he's taking! No worries, he never reads my blogs all the way through anyways!

So the assumption here seems to be that ZMA is a natural sedative that improves the REM cycle of sleep.  This is where quality of sleep happens allowing for muscle growth and recovery.
Now if the information I looked up is correct, which the consensus seems to be the sames from several sources.  The benefits are limitless.  Improved sleep can boost the immune system, reduce anxiety, improve energy and of course muscle repair and growth and for some the best benefit? a boost in growth hormone.

Increasing the levels of testosterone also increases muscle growth and recovery, it aids with sexual health and fertility.
ZMA has made a huge comeback and if all is correct I can see why.  This supplement is not only being used by bodybuilders and gym rats but men and women of all walks of life are benefiting from ZMA.

Make sure before taking any hormone altering supplements that you check with your doctor.  Another heed of caution....do not mix this supplement with calcium, calcium affects the absorption of Zinc, take your calcium in the morning with all your regular vitamins and supplements that I know your taking faithfully!

Zinc and Magnesium can be obtained through diet as well. Roast Beef, broccoli, pumpkin seeds and even dark chocolate can boost these levels.  I personally feel for the real benefits to been seen you need to be deficient in zinc or magnesium to feel the benefits.

PUT DOWN THAT BOTTLE OF WATER!!!!

Never thought you'd hear me say those words....heck, I never though I would say those words.
Well As I said yesterday we're going to recap the top ten toxins found in the house.

#1 on that list? BPA.
Bisphenol A is the compound is commonly used to harden plastic and is used in epoxy resins.

Up until two years ago BPA was used in almost every plastic item.  Toys, plastic utensils, water bottles, baby bottles, sippy cups and well I think you get the idea..

The epoxy resins are used to coat metals.  Including canned food, canned formula and even water supply pipes.

The CDC ran a study for two years between 2002-2004 and they found that the study of 2517 people, 93% of them had BPA in their urine levels.
What does that mean exactly?
Well with further studies produced showed evidence of brain development and behavioral issues with infants and young children.  There is some concern over the effect BPA has on the prostate glands of infants and children. Although their study shows a small amount of concern, they have seen relation to fetus and infant mortality at the current level in people.  Also seen, birth defects, low birth weight, pre-term babies.

There is a minimal concern for the mammary glands in and an early onset of puberty for young women.

Reproduction and hormone problems were seen in adults and more so with people who work with BPA personally.
 a
So have read all their concerns, what can we do to prevent it? Well thankfully the FDA pulled all products with or with the potential of BPA off the shelves.

There is no guarantee however that you may have something in your home. Switch everything to glass. Yes I fully understand the weight of the expense I just asked of you.  Now I am going to go ahead for everyone's sanity and say that companies are being honest when they place the NO BPA on their bottles.  So look for that if you are buying anything plastic..  This chemical is leached into our foods and drink, more so when we heat our food in plastic containers, so again avoid heating any food in plastic storage containers.

If by the end of this you have decided to breast feed only (which really is best) your baby may not be as protected as you think.  Although trace amounts, BPA did show up in breast milk.  So just like pregnancy you have to remember everything that goes in your baby is still broken down in your blood stream and pass on to the baby

The best thing you can arm yourself with is knowledge.  So just a forewarning, right now the FAD is holding tests and studies to determine what levels are safe for human consumption.  I have a few choice words for this study.....just saying.  The reason they was to determine this, right now using BPA is the most economical way to produce plastic.  Plastic is cheaper, lighter to ship and well I'm sure I don't need to discuss that our health is a far less priority then saving some financial giant a couple bucks,.  I don't know what the big deal is you know their just going to adjust the cost to reflect our pocket.

Anyway getting off tract.  It has been released yet but they are intending to allow the usage once they determine whats safe for consumption.

So consider a re-usable container with filtered water, just not one through a plastic jug,,,,,hmmmmm okay,,,,,so boiled your water and place it in a glass jar, without the lid.  The lid will have epoxy resin on it.  AHHHHHH........we're pooched! In all seriousness, switch as must as you can to glass and just be cautious of what your using.

Because of you.....

Here is a text message I received 2 days ago:

"I just realized - I'm sitting in the exact same spot I was 6 months ago - waiting for an appointment...crying....when I messaged Derek to help me! He gave me your number.  It took a little look back and realized just how MUCH I have changed!! That is because he sent me to you :) thank you for helping me be who I am!!!!"

Crystal is a mother of two.  Unfortunately her support system is a few hours away.  Daycare in the gyms are pricey and couldn't accommodate her schedule.  Crystal came to me in August.  The first two times I met with her, she was on the brink of tears.  Telling me her story her eyes were watery and red.  She felt lost.  Looking back at her in the mirror was not the carefree fun loving slim woman who stood there 7 years ago.  Instead stood an overweight, depressed mom who lost all sense of her identity.

I have come to know Crystal very well and by her third session, she was happy and excited.  After two weeks she was able to climb in the back of her suzuki swift to get the car seat out and not get stuck.  She gained more agility, confidence, strength....she even began wearing make up again.

Seeing the change in her, her husband started taking  the kids more.  The more she re-introduced herself...to herself, the more her family also got out her.  She began to play with the kids more, more energy, cleaner house, home cooked meals and well I think you get the point.

One of the most common statements, I didn't know how to eat.  My tip of advice, when starting out, keep it simple.  Eat the same thing for breakfast everyday, prep the same food.  Until your able to pick out clean food, follow a diet plan and keep it simple!

The epic battle of Good vs Bad.....fats that is!!!!! who will be victorious....???!!!! Stay tuned to find out!!!

12/11/2012

Okay ultimately the winner of that battle is up to you....its all about how much good fats you take in and how much bad fats you take in....high cholesterol vs low cholesterol.....

When people hear the word cholesterol, they automatically associated it with clogged arteries.  They envision piping much like their sinks, collecting grease and fats in the drain pipes.  Well that can be a reality, however like anything in life, cholesterol isn't always the enemy.

Now I’m not saying to go and eat a dozen eggs every single morning, that’s a good way to ensure you’re getting too much cholesterol.  Like ying and yang there has to be a balance.

Here’s something that may ease the indulgence of that yolk, cholesterol is actually a sterol.  Derived from plants and animals (plants don’t actually have cholesterol) and like much like everything else a majority is processed through the liver, some is disbursed throughout the small intestine and individual cells.

Foods such as dairy, chicken, beef, fish and eggs add to our cholesterol.  Surprisingly enough only about 15% of our cholesterol comes from our food.  The liver bundles up cholesterol breaking it down into what is called LIPOPROTEINS.  Lipoproteins are a combination of fats and protein.  This among triglycerides and vitamins are shuttled through the bloodstream and into the cells.

Here are several reasons to make sure your diet has a combination of good fats.  Cholesterol is crucial for not only maintaining cells, but for structure and formation as well.  Cholesterol aids our cells for temperature regulation and insulation.  Here are my personal favorites; cholesterol is converted into vitamin D when in the presence of sunlight, and what better way to enjoy that happy temperament then enjoying the boost in sex hormones testosterone, estrogen and progesterone.  That’s right, cholesterol synthesis’s these key hormones.  So for a lifter, a boost in testosterone could mean a boost in muscle mass.

Fear not, if you worry that you’re getting too much cholesterol, who’s there to help? Why it’s CHOLESTEROL!  Swooping in to scrap all the plague off the arteries, HDL or high density lipoproteins, will help to remove the low density lipoproteins.  Now don’t assume that you can go and eat a Big Mac and almonds will be there to save the day.  Too much of anything can be bad.  Like the old saying goes…..everything in moderation and keep it balanced!

Now go make your egg white omelet a one yolk omelet…mmmmmmm yolk!

Tendinitis

Tendinitis

The tendon, the connecting tissue that pieces together muscles and the bones.  It has the very important roll transmitting the force muscle and bones use for movement.  When functioning properly the tendons move smoothly.

However, when impaired the movement of muscle becomes inflamed and painful.  As a result, tendinitis, meaning inflammation of the tendon.

Anyone who has ever experienced tendinitis knows it’s not only incredibly painful but take the longest to heal.  The areas in which tendinitis occur are generally the same.  This is because these specific parts of the body get less blood to these areas, providing less oxygen and nutrients required to heal the injury.

Tendinitis is generally an injury caused by overuse and seen more in people later in years.  The body is not as flexible as it was 20 years ago.  However, we still try to give the same effort.  I personally think it’s our body’s way of reminding us that we’re aging.  Not like we need any more of that nonsense.

This is a very common injury for bodybuilders and I have found that myofacial release and rubber bands combined with ice/heat rotation help.  So for all us aging lifters, don’t be surprised when it’s your turn.

Symptoms include:

Tenderness, pain during movement, swelling of the tendon

So for all us unfortunates, Good Luck and post what you find helps you through healing period

Post Competition

Well, let me first start with an apology for taking such a long pause in between blogs.

This competition as your well aware was a tough one for me.  My depression and mental illness offered more challenges this year then in the previous.  However, it was more manageable with the right combination of medication, nutrition, vitamins/supplements, exercise and of course something to focus on.

My experience with the IDFA was nothing less then spectacular! Anyone who knows me, knows the fallout I had with another organization based on their judging criteria., this was not the case with the IDFA.  It was an extremely tough competition and I feel that it was judged fairly.  I loved every minute of the experience.

The IDFA was welcoming and appropriately tiered, I wasn't lined up with competitors who were far more advanced then myself and they made sure that every competitor was comfortable and happy.  I enjoyed that we all had our 15 seconds on stage and everyone had their stories heard.  Well put together.

I can't thank Sally enough for being patient and understanding with my condition.  Not an easy task to take on someone with such inconsistencies. But she did it with nothing less then a smile and a mothering nature.

My kids were exceptional, they sometimes even ate what I ate.  Jocelyn has peeked an interest in competing and wyatt was lifting his two pound weights and matching me in push ups.  He is my mini personal trainer, I think I can see where his future is heading.

I have an amazing support system and I'm lucky for that.  I can't thank everyone enough.  Even Steve's mom pitched in and made my meals for me.  Thanks MA!
I love you all and thank you so much.

Contest Prep 2012

Well so it begins.  Gearing up for the Sudbury show in May.  That gives me 16 and a half weeks.  I'm at a good starting point. Right now I'm sitting at about 18% body fat and weighing 145 lbs.

At the Sudbury show of last year I came in around 10% and my weight for the competition date was 132lbs..  So I need to get down to 137 pre competition to bring me to 132 comp day.

Diet is same as always, chicken, rice, sweet potato, and a little ground beef thrown in there.  My training right now is lifting heavy, trying to build as much as I can.  I lost quite a bit being out of the gym for so long....BOO!!! Nice thing, muscle has memory and it won't take long to get it back.

So Day 1, I have hammered my chest, followed by the stairmaster and an hour of plyo.  Gonna change it up a little more this year.  I came in well for Sudbury just not as tight in the glutes, gonna target those for a little bit.  So there it is Day 1.  Follow me on my way to Sudbury!!!
